As the sun reaches its highest point and we reach the longest day of the year, we celebrate the summer solstice. Join me for an extended practice to mark this occasion, where we will work with the themes of energy, light and stillness.
The term "solstice" comes from the Latin words sol (sun) and sistere (to stand still).
This duality serves as inspiration for our practice. Poses that require energy and build internal heat coupled with poses that allow us to pause and focus on the subtle movements of the body as we inhale and exhale.
Expect sun salutations to celebrate the sun’s energy, expansive poses such as triangle, half moon and the warrior series plus balances like tree pose to cultivate focus and a sense of calmness. An extended guided meditation will draw the session to a close and hopefully send you on your way feeling both energised and refreshed.
At the beginning of the session we will spend some time breaking down the poses of the sun salutation sequence A so that everyone has a chance to find the best variation for them and maybe refine the movements a little.
If the idea of 3 hours of movement puts you off - don’t fear! I am allowing plenty of time for running through the poses of the sun salutations including questions and a lovely long guided meditation of around 45 minutes to finish.
