Extended Practice: Summer Solstice

Saturday 22 June 11am-1pm

  • 18 British pounds
  • Dilton Marsh Memorial Hall, BA13 4DT

Class Description

Join me for a two hour extended practice marking the summer solstice. Traditionally yogis complete 108 sun salutations to mark solstices and equinoxes, particularly on the summer solistice. The longest day of the year, also coincides with International Yoga Day. To mark these two dates why not join me on Saturday 22nd June for an extended sun salutations practice. I will lead you through 90 minutes of sun salutations followed by an extended guided relaxation. This will be a moving meditation and our movement practice will be led by our collective breath. There is no pressure to complete 108 sun salutations and indeed, depending on the rhythm of our breath we might not get through all 108 within the time. I will encourage you to make the practice your own, maybe you want to complete all of the sun salutations, maybe you want to slow it down and do less. As always I will offer a number of versions of the sun salutations so everyone can personalise their experience. Completing an extended practice of sun salutations is a deeply meditative and rewarding experience. Options will be given but completing a high number of sun salutations is physically demanding so this class isn't recommended for anyone who is new to yoga and new to sun saluations. The practice of 108 sun salutations is linked to the Hindu belief that 108 is a sacred number: there are 108 Upanishads (Hindu spiritual texts), 108 names for Hindu deities, 108 sacred points on the body (marma points), and 108 beads on a mala, and…the distance between the sun and the earth is roughly 108 times the sun’s diameter. Please get in touch with any questions. Cancellations with more than 7 days notice will be refunded in full. Cancellations with more than 48 notice but less than 7 days will receive a 50% refund and cancellations within 48 hours do not qualify for a refund.
